The ASA's courses have been re-structured. The ASA coach education courses have been endorsed by the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC), this is an endorsement of sport specific coach education qualifications and demonstrates that our qualifications are aligned to a nationally agreed framework.
It aims to create a recognised standard for coach education and make it easier to identify a quality coach in any sport at any level. It will contribute to the professionalisation of coaching. Swimming has been one of the first 6 sports to sign up to UKCC.
The new structure will run ASA coach education courses, endorsed by the UKCC at Levels 1 – 4 in the following Aquatic Strands:
- Coaching Swimming
- Teaching Aquatics
- Coaching Synchronised Swimming
- Coaching Diving
- Coaching Water Polo

The Institute of Swimming, IoS (the training & development arm of the ASA) has realised that meeting the requirements of the Approved Centre Status 2007 may be beyond some centres capabilities.
Thus it has become an Approved Centre itself, and has tasked each of its Regional Offices to use those centres that are unable to meet the new requirements as it satellite sites. The Education Officers in each region are seeking out the best facilities to run training in, and creating a network of sites.
The IoS Education Officer (EO) then becomes the Key Contact, with the ASA Awarding Body. The centres become Satellite Centres of IoS Region and provide a Course Organiser on site to liaise with the Education Officer.
The region then:
-
Deals with Awarding Body
-
Organises Tutor/Presenter
-
Organises Internal Verification
-
Deals with booking of candidates
-
Provides Support for Tutors
-
Provides Support for Candidates
-
Ensures Quality Assurance Process
-
Performs the Monitoring and Evaluation
-
Provides access to marketing thorough Regional and National sources
-
Provides candidates access to National and Regional funding, making the courses more affordable
-
Has access to a database of category 1 seminars, which can only be delivered by the Regions
-
Pay the centre for use of its facilities & services
By creating a network of centres the IoS is able to deliver quality training throughout the region.
