Statement on Hillingdon Borough
Hillingdon is the second largest Borough in London and home to 4 swimming clubs.
Hillingdon’s pool stock is going to change dramatically with the arrival in 2010 of two 50 metre pools (one indoor / one outdoor). This meets a strategic need for a public swimming facility in the centre of a very large Borough.
The new site will be run by the Leisure Operator Fusion
www.fusion-lifestyle.com who also run facilities in Southwark and Lambeth.
To take advantage of this huge opportunity London Swimming is working with the Council and key partners, including Brunel University, Fusion and the swimming clubs in developing a shared vision for aquatics in Hillingdon.
This vision will be based around the principles outlined in the recently released ‘A Strategy to Get London Swimming 2008-2012+’ which is endorsed by the Greater London Authority and Sport England London.
The principles include:
Ø A pathway for progression that minimises the opportunity for drop out
Ø A range of opportunities to engage in all of the aquatic disciplines
Ø A financial sustainable model that encourages co-operation between partners
To date London Swimming has met individually with the swimming clubs, council and the pool operator to identify their needs and ambitions for the future.
To identify the current provision for swimming in the Borough representatives from the swimming clubs have formed a working party to map this activity, look at how they can work closer together and identify the pathway from learn to swim to performance.
Once the work has been conducted by the swimming clubs, a meeting of all parties will be called to build a shared vision.
This position statement will be updated as matters develop.
